Weekend

Friday: Class, lunch, shower, laundry, dinner, bed.

Sunday: Sleep, eat, essay, sleep.

Saturday was really the day with all the action. We went to Avebury, Stonehenge, and Salisbury.

There was another larger henge in Avebury, but it was never preserved.
There were also a lot of sheep.

I didn't totally understand Avebury's significance. It was pretty, though. After that we went to Stonehenge, which someone had told me was right next to a highway, but it was actually a good mile and half away from the highway and more secluded than they made it sound.

What I learned about Stonehenge is that we know nothing about Stonehenge.

We got a lot closer than this, but the other picture is posted on my Facebook.

Then there was a cathedral of some sort in Salisbury.

The stained glass was BEAUTIFUL.

I liked this one a lot.

There was a cool stained glass window of Saint George and what I assumed was a dragon although it may have been some sort of serpent. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good picture of it because the light was making it difficult. There was also another that had a really funny name that I couldn't get a picture of... maybe I'll remember the name, though.

I enjoyed the tiny model of guys building the cathedral.
According to Professor Connors, the teacher of the British Culture course, the cathedral was built in approximately 25 years, so it is one of the only buildings of its size and age that is not a mash-up of a bunch of different architectural styles - it was all built in the same time period.

When we were there, a wedding was just ending. The ladies were all wearing fascinators.

Also in the cathedral was the world's oldest functioning clock. It was made in or before 1386 and this is what it looks like:
If you can figure out what time it was when this was taken, I'll be really impressed.

Aaaand here's a group picture of those of us who went on this particular outing.
From left to right, Amanda, Sophia, Jenny, Prof. Connery, Morgan, Prof. Connors, Amanda, Kara, me.
Amanda and Sophia's dad was also there because Sophia is the one who broke her elbow.
He did not make it into the group photo.

On Sunday, I went to the Wig & Pen pub with some of the girls. There were unfortunately no wigs, pens, or vegetarian options. I don't think Oxford has vegetarians. They must all live in London. I've also been wondering how Brits can stay so thin when the food here is primarily meat, starches, and sugar. It's been kind of rough for me so far - I can tell that I'm slowing down because of the limited dietary options, and have been headache-y from all of the extra sugar that's in everything. I had an upset stomach earlier in the week, and there was almost nothing that I could eat at the Oxford servery - everything is really heavy. I may be stepping out to Pret-a-Manger more frequently than I had planned, it's the only place around here that carries vegetarian food that isn't all pasta and bread. Diet just makes a huge difference in my mood and energy level, so hopefully I figure something out soon.
